With this backstory in mind, what do you believe: are detectives born or made?Ī: I wouldn’t take “born” too literally here: the reference is less to genetic heritage and more to formative childhood events and circumstances. Q: A quote from one of Claire’s favorite books reads “detectives aren’t made, they’re born a detective only needs to somehow be shown his true nature.” In The Infinite Blacktop, you go back to Claire’s childhood, her troubled home life, and the detective stories that brought her and her friends together. The novel follows the self-declared “world’s best detective” on her search for her would-be killer and pairs the fast-paced hunt with flashbacks to her tumultuous beginnings as a young detective. Infinite Blacktop is the third book in her Claire DeWitt series, following Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead and Claire DeWitt and the Bohemian Highway. However, Sara says she prefers to work in prose to tell a story. She’s worked on the series Southland, Berlin Station, and Chance. She currently resides in Los Angeles, where she continues to write for both the page and screen. Sara Gran is a mystery, thriller, and horror novelist from Brooklyn, New York.
